Who We Are

Kath Horner
Mixed media artist
Since my retirement I have revisited my love of painting. A life full of experiences
has brought me to this place. I now use acrylic paint; modelling paste and anything
that creates a delightful structure on my canvas. A variety of household tools that make
memorable marks accompany my thought process.
Often, I start a canvas with an idea of what the painting will look like. But as I go along,
my intuitive self takes over. Many times, the original idea turns out to be something
else – something better and something far more inspiring.
The natural landscape is my playground, a space to investigate contemporary representation of the
world we see around us. I have an inquiring mind, a thirst for new ideas and an in-built curiosity
which all allow my motivation for art to run free.

I have my Dad to thank for my love of photography. He was a professional photographer by trade for the first years of his working life and although by the time I came along, he was no longer a photographer by profession, his love of photography (and skill) remained and he shared his enthusiasm with me. I am slightly obsessed by photography :-) I have no specific genre that I stick with, instead I like to push myself to try new techniques or subject matters and love how photographs can capture a moment in time, tell a story, evoke an emotion.
I also enjoy teaching others and as most of us now have powerful cameras in our pockets - photography has never been more accessible

I'm an intuitive artist and my work combines spontaneity and control. Inspired by nature, imagination and the creative process itself, my paintings are an interplay of lines, light, form and colour. I create expressive pieces which leave interpretation to the audience. This further develops imagination - both for the artist and the viewer. I prefer flowing mediums which allow an element of a surprise to be created in the outcome
